The DIL Difference

Developments in literacy programs are transforming lives and changing communities. The following indicators demonstrate how DIL is promoting engagement in learning, addressing gender disparity, and leading to better academic and life outcomes.

In addition:

Developments in literacy students are excelling in standardized tests and exams. 50% of DIL’s first group of high school graduates earned an A and A+ in the national board exams. Further, our primary grade students are performing math functions and reading stories at levels far above their cohorts in the general population.

In one rural community where we have had a long-term presence, 60% of our all female alum enrolled in or completed high school, and some 20% have completed college and are currently employed. In this same community, 3 DIL graduates have set up small businesses.

What Others Say About Us:

“Development in Literacy (DIL) is this year’s recipient of the UK-based 2012 Asia-Pacific STARS Impact Awards, in the category of Education. DIL was selected from hundreds of applicants for providing access to education to Pakistan’s most vulnerable children through its holistic quality education programs in remote areas and geared towards encouraging girls to attend schools.”

– STARS Impact Awards

“DIL builds schools for girls in Pakistan that are the most exhilarating things I’ve seen there…” and is “just about the best long-term counterterrorism investment available.”

– Nicholas Kristoff, Nov 2008; The New York Times

Supporters Of Developments in literacy

Developments in Literacy (DIL) USA and our network of global affiliates in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Canada, and Pakistan cumulatively raised over $3.5 million in 2014. DIL USA’s total fundraising in 2014 amounted to  $2.3 million, of which 89 cents of every dollar was spent on programs to support our schools, teacher education and program management.

How do you convince people to send their daughters to school?
Before a school is opened in a village, DIL staff members identify and make contact with a respected village elder. Through the process of education and open discussion, the elder is convinced of the importance of female education and often acts as a liason, helping to convince the community of the important of female education.

Can you open a school in my village?
Unfortunately, it is not economically feasible for us to open only one school. Each school requires constant monitoring and the teachers are trained on an ongoing basis. To keep costs down DIL prefers to fund larger projects that support numerous schools.
