Developments in Literacy (DIL) extends an enthusiastic congratulations to Malala Yousafzai, recipient of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize alongside Kailash Satyarthi, an Indian veteran of campaigns to free children from trafficking and end child labor. Yousafzai is recognized for her courageous efforts to advance girls’ right to education in Pakistan and around the world.
When Taliban presence threatened access to education in her community in the Swat Valley, 11-year-old Malala began speaking publicly and passionately about the value of education, especially for girls. On October 9, 2012, Taliban men targeted the outspoken teen, boarded her school bus and shot her in the head. In spite of this attack on her life, Malala remained resolute both toward her belief in the power of education and her commitment to peace.
At age 17, Malala Yousafazai is the youngest Nobel Peace Prize Laureate in the 113-year history of the prestigious award.
